TROOPS will get a hero’s welcome from businesses who sign up to a new scheme, which promises a “civic hug” when they come to town.
The Heroes Welcome project, which asks business owners to display a window sticker pledging to welcome members of the armed forces, has been launched in Chesterfield.
John Senior, a former soldier who served in Afghanistan and the man behind the scheme, was welcomed by the Mayor, council leaders, and representatives of service organisations at the launch at the Town Hall.
He said: “It started with me putting up a hand drawn poster in my restaurant in Scarborough saying ‘heroes welcome.’
“Other people started putting the signs up and it has just grown and grown.”
He added: “It is really very simple, a sticker and a smile and that’s it. It’s a civic hug for the armed forces.”
Over 50 authorities already support the scheme, with Chesterfield Borough Council being the first in Derbyshire.
