A van driver has been arrested by police investigating a gas explosion at a house which left its owner in need of medical attention.

The force of the blast, in the kitchen of the house at Market Square, Tideswell, was so powerful it threw the man across the room.

He was later treated at his local GP's surgery after getting glass in his eye.

Police were called to the scene by a neighbour and a local firm also attended to turn off the gas supply.

The van driver was arrested at his Rotherham home on suspicion of causing criminal damage to an external flue pipe at the property.

He has been interviewed by police and bailed until September pending further enquiries.

The Health and Safety Executive was also informed about the incident, which happened just before 4pm on Monday.
