Thousands of north Derbyshire motorists faced long delays getting home from work last night after gridlock hit the area following an accident which closed the southbound carriageway of the M1 for more than eight hours.
Traffic heading south along the A61 corridor between Barlborough, Staveley, Chesterfield, Clay Cross and Alfreton was at a standstill as drivers diverted off the motorway.

The accident on the M1 happened shortly after 10am on Tuesday between junction 29 for Chesterfield and junction 28 for Alfreton.

It involved two lorries and a flat-bed truck.
