Derbyshire County Council has teamed up with the fire service to provide free dusk to dawn nightlights for elderly and vulnerable residents in the county.
A fire service team, dedicated to promoting fire safety, regularly visits people in their own homes to provide advice and safety equipment such as smoke alarms.
This will now include installation of one of the nightlights.
There will be approximately 4,500 lights for distribution and installation across Derbyshire.
Elderly or vulnerable residents receiving a safety visit will receive one of the low energy, plug in lights as well as a safety information leaflet.
The lights can be used inside to illuminate hallways, landings, bedrooms and passages.
The project aims to:
- Provide community safety information
- Provide low energy lighting to keep people safe and confident in their own homes
- Prevent slips and falls
- Help reduce the fear of crime
- Reduce the number of victims of domestic burglaries
Derbyshire County councillor for Community safety Clive Moesby said: "We are fortunate to have low levels of crime in Derbyshire but people can often still feel vulnerable in their own homes.
"These lights will not only make people more confident they will also provide practical benefits by lighting up hallways and bedrooms to make sure people do not trip or fall.
"For a relatively low investment we will be able to make a big impact on people's sense of well being."
