A super-fit cop who won a UK power-lifting title has been awarded a top police trophy in recognition of his sporting achievements.
Temp Insp Phil Laing, of Ripley, received the John Newing Cup for Achievement in Sport and a crystal glass prize from Chief Con Mick Creedon.

A police spokesman said: "This is an amazing achievement. With this award, we recognise the incredible dedication he has shown to his chosen sport and wish him all the best for his continued success in the future."

Temp Insp Laing has represented Derbyshire Constabulary in competitions for several years and in 2007 he broke British records in his weight class to take the title of Police Sport UK Powerlifting Champion.

He has also won the North East Drug-Free Powerlifting Championships, British Powerlifting Championships, British Drug-Free Single Lift Championships and European Drug-Free Powerlifting Championships.

His other achievements include British records in squat, bench-press and dead-lift powerlifting events.
