Checks on child car seats were carried out by Derbyshire County Council at five towns in the county and 73 per cent of seats were found not to be safe for the children using them.

A child car seat fitting expert carried out checks in Long Eaton, Swadlincote, Buxton, Bolsover and Matlock during May.

Cllr Clive Moseby, said: "I'm shocked that so many children are travelling in unsafe car seats. Had any of these children had been involved in an accident they could have been injured.

"I'd like to appeal to all parents and carers in Derbyshire to make sure their child is in the correct seat."

Advice on fitting and buying car seats is at www.childcarseats.org.uk
