Published Date: 16 May 2008
War planes have flown over the Derwent Dams once again, to mark the 65th anniversary of one of the Second World War's most famous raids.
Hundreds of people made their way to the dam to see a Lancaster bomber lead a fly-past over the historic structure, which was used by pilots practicing for the Dambusters raids in 1943.

The event was organised by Peak District National Park Authority, Severn Trent Water and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for hundreds of invited guests.

Actor Richard Todd, who starred in the 1955 Dambusters film, Eric Quinney, who flew the plane in the movie, and the last surviving Dambusters pilot, Les Munro, were there to mark the event.

A memorial service was held before the Lancaster bomber, a Spitfire, a Hurricane and a Dakota wowed the crowds, including many uninvited visitors who walked or cycled to the beauty spot.

Members of the Royal British Legion's Bamford branch were invited to stand along the dam walls during the event.

Janet Kirk from the branch said: "It was an honour for us to be here and on the wall — not many people get to go there."

Alan Ramsdale, branch vice-chairman, added: "It is an absolute honour. It is fantastic."

Enthusiast Henry Woolley, of Matlock, said: "It is definitely worth coming to see. It is interesting for people who like planes and it is really spectacular here."

Hazel Hollingsworth, of Eckington, said: "My dad was in the RAF. We have to remember the people who gave their lives so others are having a better life now. We can't forget."
