More than 500 north Derbyshire primary school children have enjoyed free golf coaching over the summer months courtesy of Big Lottery funding.
The after-school coaching has been delivered in 20 primary schools in the Bolsover area and the best four boys and four girls in each school were then chosen to represent their school in a festival at a golf club.
Ninteen schools entered the two festivals in the summer, held at Bondhay and Shirland Golf Clubs and the winning teams from these festivals then competed in a Ryder Cup style grand final at Bondhay.
Westhouses Primary School and Clowne Juniors took part and after some excellent golf by both teams, Westhouses clinched the trophy.
Bolsover schools' golf development co-ordinator, Craig Pollard, said: "The golf programme has brought young people to a sport they may not otherwise have ever had the chance to try.
''Many of them have not only enjoyed their experiences but also shown great potential if they choose to continue with the sport.
''Westhouses is the smallest school in the Bolsover and District School Sport Partnership and it is truly a credit to them in how they engaged with the golf programme.
''They are deserving winners of the trophy, and who knows, one of them may well be representing Europe in the real Ryder Cup in 20 years time!"
If any youngsters are interested in starting golf please contact Bolsover's Golf Development Co-ordinator, Craig Pollard on 0782 5168437.
