Alvaston & Boulton 1st XI 139-8, Chesterfield 1st XI 143-1
(Derbyshire Premier League)
Chesterfield powered their way to a third successive win when visiting Alvaston & Boulton on Saturday as they wrapped up the game by a nine-wicket margin with an hour to spare.
Having put the home team in to bat, Chesterfield opened with a left-arm pace combination composed of Derbyshire's players Kevin Dean and Ross Whiteley.
Runs were in short supply and became even scarcer when Whiteley gave way to Brian Gladwin.
The pace of Dean and the spin of Gladwin curtailed scoring to such a degree that attempts to break the shackles led to wickets coming Chesterfield's way.
Dean reeled off 15 overs to finish with 3-27 while Gladwin's 15 over spell produced figures of 2-27.
The two then combined to capture the sixth wicket as Dean's quick return to the bowler's end allowed Gladwin to remove a bail while the non-striking batsman was stranded mid-wicket.
At this point the home team had collapsed to 99-6 having used 40 of their 50 over allocation over.
A charged up Chesterfield side stayed in the driving seat for remainder of the innings as Simon Lacey and Whiteley proved effective closers for the second week running
A solitary six from South African Bardo Fransman was the only boundary conceded as Alvaston were held to an additional 40 runs in the final ten overs.
The 50-over total of 139-8 was below par on a ground with shortish square boundaries which Chesterfield were soon finding with ease as Alan Gofton and Ben Slater took advantage of wayward deliveries.
Slater (15) was bowled by an inswinging yorker when the score on 26 but this was the only hiccup in proceedings as Chesterfield dominated the remainder of the match.
Alex Hibbert and Gofton batted with discretion to reach 102 by the end of the 30th over by which time the game seemed secure.
The pair then launched an assault with Derbyshire's Nayan Doshi the initial target as he went for 16 off two overs before being withdrawn from the attack.
But the assault continued apace and concluded with two fours from Hibbert, the first of which took him past 50 and tied the scores before the second won the game in resounding style.
Gofton was left on 61 not out in a welcome return to his form of last year after mixed fortunes in the current campaign.
The one sided nature of the contest was reflected in the points division as Chesterfield retain third place in the league.
