Damian Williams in Doctor in the House at the Pomegranate, Chesterfield.

It’s well-known in the world of comedy that you can’t trust foreign hotels – especially when Damian Williams is staying there.

He’s back at the Pomegranate this week, causing his own inimitable brand of uproarious mayhem in the classic farce A Bedfull of Foreigners.

As well as the usual ingredients of double entendres and discarded clothing (lots of that in Act Two), there are fun and games with a rope and malfunctioning doors, a running joke with a radiator and plenty of Damian’s trademark adlibbing.

Damian plays Stanley, a Brit abroad for the first time – and he really should have gone to Blackpool instead. Kylie Butler is his long-suffering wife, David Rumelle a Manuel-like hotel porter. Paul Morse, usually seen in a frock as pantomime dame, plays the dilapidated establishment’s hyperactive axe-wielding manager.

Quite how the cast keep a straight face is a mystery; on the first night some of them didn’t even try. Jo Parsons as philandering Claude and Charlotte Dawson (rumoured to be the daughter of the more famous Les) as a glamorous ‘cabaret artiste’ laughed openly, and Polly Smith as ice-maiden Helga almost cracked a couple of times.

It’s Damian. It’s hilarious. It runs till Saturday.
