Pasta masters of traditional cuisine

Lombardis Restaurant

Lombardis Restaurant

Italian dining experiences are synonymous with good food served in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

One of my favourite places to eat is Lombardi’s in Chesterfield, a passion obviously shared by the large mid-week crowd who had gone there in search of tasty tucker in convivial surroundings.

The Lombardi family, who hail from a town outside Naples, have been feeding traditional Italian fare to the diners of Derbyshire for a decade now.

There’s a real buzz about their restaurant, where a smiling, friendly maitre d’ greets you at the door, chefs can be seen behind a small arch cooking up Continental creations and unobtrusive waiters attend to your every need.

The meals are as generous as the welcome. My partner’s starter - Uova Florentina - was big enough to qualify as a main course and delicious though it was, he struggled to eat it all. His piping-hot first platter (£5.50) was a mouth-watering medley of poached egg in tomato, garlic, spinach and Parmesan cheese.

For the main course, he chose the priciest dish on the menu - Filetto Reale - at a wallet-busting £21, but well worth every penny. Melt-in-the-mouth grilled fillet steak was stuffed with dolcelatte cheese, wrapped with parma ham and cooked in a rich creamy sauce with a hint of alcohol.

As tempted as I was by my favourite dish at Lombardi’s, the calzone, I decided to be adventurous and go for one of the three specials - Pollo Casanova (£13.95). Succulent chicken breast was enlivened by spicy chorizo, peppers, garlic and white wine, with every mouthful a treat to eat.

I’d set my heart on home-made lemon cheesecake for dessert but sadly, it had gone. Instead, I opted for the chocolate tart and vanilla ice cream at £5.95. The ice cream was delicious but the tart tasted bland and lacked the wow factor.

Still, that elusive cheesecake gives me the best excuse to return to Lombardi’s... and soon!
