Game for a laugh

Everyone's favourite comic actor Damian Williams is back at Chesterfield's Pomegranate this week, fresh from a hugely popular panto season up the bypass in Sheffield.

The play is an updated version of Robin Hawdon's evergreen farce The Mating Game, and Damian had the large first night crowd (and the rest of the cast!) in fits of laughter, helped by a generous sprinkling of missed cues, ad libs, dropped trousers and meaningful glances at the audience. So it's business pretty much as usual!

This time he plays Draycott, a TV chat show host with all the trappings of success except one: when it comes to getting the girl, he's convinced he's jinxed.

He's surrounded by women; man-eating PR girl Honey (Emily Trebicki) and prim but adoring secretary Julia manage to lose most of their clothes (Caroline O'Hara); even earthy housekeeper Mrs Finney (Sarah Whitlock, also fresh from panto, here in Chesterfield) flicks the odd feather boa. But poor Draycott simply can't get his mojo working.

Brother James (Edward Nudd), back from Australia with a bottle of rocket fuel schnapps and a magnetic attraction for anything female, is no help at all. Until . . .

Well, if you want to know if Damian finally gets the girl, you'll just have to go and see it. All I'm saying is it's hilarious.

The Mating Game runs until Saturday.
