Urban Gypsies belly dancers to appear at Chesterfield Canal Festival

Music, dance and drama will be aired all this weekend during the Chesterfield Canal Festival at Staveley Town Basin.

There will be a large entertainment marquee and an outdoor events area to host performances by belly dancers The Urban Gupsies, semi-finalists in Britain’s Got Talent, Geet First and Sheffield Celebrated Clog Dancers.

The musical highlight will be a concert by the Swing Commanders on Saturday night. Tickets cost £10 and can be bought at the Festival, on the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s website or by ringing 01246 477569. There may be a few tickets for sale on the gate, but don’t count on it.

During the day the New Orleans Strollers, Brampton Community Band the Natterjacks, Albert’s Skiffle Band and the Woodhouse Prize Band will cater for every taste.

Springwell Community College will be represented by their junior, youth and adult choirs.

There will be music and drama from Life & Times and the Pomegranate Youth Theatre presenting selections from their hugely successful recent production of Cuckoo – Tales of the Chesterfield Canal.

The arts programme has been sponsored by Markham Vale.

In addition there will be tripboat cruises, birds of prey flying, canoeing, Segway rides, children’s rides and zorbing on the water.

Dozens of stalls, lots of food and drink and a real ale bar will add to the attractions.

The Duke of Devonshire will declare the festival open in a ceremony which starts at 10.30 on Saturday, June 30. All this will run in conjunction with steam days at Barrow Hill Roundhouse. There will be shuttle buses running between the two sites.

The festival will be at Staveley Town Basin (S43 3XZ) on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is £3, free for under 12s. There will be free parking nearby.
