Church hosts comedy play
Flapper girls mingle with fortune-hunters in a new 1920s comedy “Where There’s a Will…”, which will be staged in Alfreton.
Ailing business tycoon Thomas Makepeace announces his plan to divide his property between his squabbling sons – but only on condition that they live in harmony with each other.
But sharing a weekend together at the family home proves a trying time for the bickering brothers – especially when their old nanny is drafted in to see fair play.
The comedy, being presented at Alfreton Wesley Church at 7pm on Friday and Saturday, July 13 and 14, is brimful of eccentric characters, such as middle-aged maid Tilly, passionately in love with the young master of the house; and old Thomas himself, who prefers his cat to his family.
The three-act play has a cast of eight.
Producer David Hopkinson said: “We always chose a comedy for our summer play and hope to attract the usual large attendances.
“We have had lots of laughs at rehearsals and hope that our audiences enjoy the play as much. The 1920s costumes have been an added bonus.”
There is no admission charge to the play, but a collection will be taken for Cancer Research UK, in memory of drama group member Margot Perkins who died earlier this year.
David said: “Margot was a very talented and much-loved actress who appeared in most of our plays. We shall really miss her.”
The group has been presenting plays for over 20 years and now stages three productions a year – at Easter, summer and Christmas.
