CHESTERFIELD: Comedy of Terrors at the Pomegranate is a fun-packed riot
John Goodrum and Susan Earnshaw in The Comedy of Terrors at the Pomegranate Theatre, Chesterfield.
I’d completely forgotten about the flatulent corpse.
I’d completely forgotten about the flatulent corpse.
But then it is ten years since John Goodrum’s Comedy of Terrors premiered at the Pomegranate – hardly surprising if odd details slip my mind.
It all came back to me this week, when I saw it all over again.
Let me give you a flavour. There’s the Joneses, played by John Goodrum. And the Smiths, played by Sue Earnshaw. There’s also Cheryl, or possibly Charlotte, but she’s stranded elsewhere after a plane crash.
Vivian likes a bit of devil worship, complete with horned mask, but isn’t into bondage. Fiona’s cockney accent is a bit variable. Janet pops up towards the end, and that’s a bit of a surprise.
Are you confused yet? Don’t worry, all becomes clear, with the help of a red hanky, a theatrical skip, a white mac and some great sound effects.
There’s mention of a desert island, a sandwich shop and the Clay Cross and District Sons of Satan, and quite a lot happens in the lighting box, but most of the action takes place on the Pomegranate stage, which is rather convenient when you think about it.
If you haven’t seen it, do. If you have, see it again; it’s just as funny and ingenious second time around. I was worn out with laughing by the end.
Comedy of Terrors runs till Saturday, February 16, 2013.
