Thousands set to attend Chesterfield Pride event

Thousands of people are expected to turn out for the Chesterfield Pride celebration this weekend.

The event takes place on Sunday, July 24, 1pm to 7pm at Queen’s Park and is open to everyone.

It will be the second year that it has taken place in the town, following last year’s success.

Event committee chairman, Dan Walker, said: “Last year was our first year and we had about 2,300 people turn out in the rain so we are expecting another good turnout again.

“The event is open to everyone, not just the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. It will be a real family day, with great acts, lot of stalls and a children’s area.”

Pride events have become more frequent across the country in recent years - with Chesterfield hosting its first in 2015.

The events celebrate diversity and highlight the fight for equality for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

As part of the day, there will be a moment to remember the 49 people who were shot dead at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, last month.

“We will be remembering those who lost their lives as a mark of respect,” Mr Walker said.

The event relies on donations and sponsorship to run and the dedication of a number of volunteers.

Mr Walker added: “Without the volunteers the event would not happen.

“It is about bringing the community together.

“It is not going to be a political day, there will be no big speeches or anything like that.

“It is more of a fun day and to integrate people together.”
