FOOTBALL has always been a sport that has the ability to bring people together and even in times of economic struggle it can bring a smile to those involved.
It was a saving grace in the 1970’s when a friendly football match took place between the production team and the maintenance team at the Tube Works sports ground in Hasland during a period when short time work had been imposed by the company.
Reader, Colin Tart, sent in these snaps of the friendly which was keenly contested – despite having a referee full of indecision and lacking a whistle – but eventually the maintenance team with the partnership of two brothers, Ian and Stuart Radford, overwhelmed the opposition who’s defence could not hold out.
The suspected final score was Maintenence 7-3 Production, However Les Evans and Norman Bullows from the Production side might have disputed that final score.
