RETRO: Were you a top tot of the past? - with slideshow

The DT is launching its popular annual Cute Kids competition - formerly Child of the Year - as we take a look back at winners of the past.

Cuties competed to be named Derbyshire’s most charming child as well as win a host of prizes including toys from Chesterfield Co-operative Store and framed photos.

In 1988 little gem Gemma Nelson came face to face with another beauty - Miss Chesterfield Julie Soar. The lucky tot was presented with £60 worth of toys from Julie.

Lauren Carline won the hearts of DT readers in 1990. The seven-and-a-half months old of North Wingfield won a bundle of prizes and the following year Louise Hopkinson of Walton, claimed the title.

Toddler George Freeman was in the winner’s frame in 1993 as his parents were presented with a framed portrait of their son and toys. Mum Angela, of Bolsover, said: “We would like to thank everyone who voted for our son and made us such proud parents.”

Two-year-old Jessica Clark, of Chesterfield, was top of the tots in 1994 while in 1995 Jack Evison, of Brampton, won the contest.

Let us know if you - or your child - took part and see next week’s DT for details of how to enter this year’s Cute Kids.
