A FOLK-TINGED take on contemporary pop is the latest offering from a top Derbyshire musician.

Sam Genders has long been central to the lively Matlock music scene which launched, among others, the roots rock band Gomez.

His new project Diagrams has already been receiving rave national reviews – with the Guardian making the band’s Tall Buildings its single of the week, labelling it as “delightfully quirky. It’s crammed with gorgeous hooks and sprightly, boinging melodies that leave you feeling like you’re trotting down a cobbled hill on a shire horse full of banjos, inside your head.”

So far Diagrams has released an impressive five-track debut EP, Black Light.

Sam, whose family still live in Derbyshire, said after quitting acclaimed experimental folk outfit Tunng, his professional focus fell on production and writing for artists such as former Gomez front man Ben Ottewell, who also hails from Matlock.

Sam added: “I was in quite a dark place personally before and to an extent during Tunng and I needed to stop and take a break to work on myself a bit and find my self-confidence.

“I cured myself by working in an inner city primary school for three years. I’ve come out of myself a lot and the music has come from that.”

Diagrams will be playing at London’s Hoxton Bar and Kitchen on Tuesday, March 13, at Cooler in Bristol on Wednesday, March 14, Manchester’s Ruby Lounge on Thursday, March 15, Static Gallery in Liverpool on Friday, March 16, Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on Saturday, March 17 and at King Tuts in Glasgow on Sunday, March 18.
