Band of the year is back!

Band of the Year 2009 Valve

AFTER an enforced lay off last year, the Derbyshire Times band of the year competition is back – and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever.

The annual search for the area’s best band has been running since 1987, when the Tar Babies lifted the trophy for the very first time.

And this summer, we’ll once again be inviting groups from across north Derbyshire to submit their demos to pick the best 12 who will battle it out live at Chesterfield’s prestigious Winding Wheel, in November.

It was Chesterfield rockers Valve who were crowned champs last time and the band’s frontman Ben Miles has fond memories of the contest over the years.

“I’ve played it a bunch of times now and been in attendance at more than I care to remember.

“In most respects it’s something of a mixed bag, which is kinda what I like about it.

“You never know if you’re gonna be on first or last, you’ve no idea what the other bands are gonna sound like (except Nyliss, because I genuinely can’t think of a band of the year without them...) and you have no idea who is going to turn up.

“All of these things give me a sense of excitement about the night and in it’s often quirky, occasionally frightening and perpetually dysfunctional way that’s what makes it such good fun – both as a performer and a spectator.

“Quite looking forward to who’s going to be on the line up this year. What if We Were Superheroes and The Educatables both played excellent sets last time (I’m still certain the judges meant for the latter to win and merely got the band names mixed up) and there’s never any shortage of surprises with BOTY.”

Watch this space for further details of how to enter this year’s competiton.
