And the winner is....

IT was the Culture Thieves who stole the hearts of our judges and claimed the title Derbyshire Times Band of the Year 2008.

The Chesterfield quartet put on a storming performance in the competition's grand final at the town's Winding Wheel.

And they impressed the judging panel with their tight performance and hook-filled indie rock songs.

Hundreds of music fans turned out to see who would take over the title from last year's winners All At Stake.

And there was a titanic tussle on the night — with great performances from the other finalists Valve, Mexican Kids At Home, Pocket Satellite, The Shirks and Millhouses Park.

But it was the Culture Thieves who saw off the competition to take the crown, kudos and a clutch of top prizes.

The band's frontam Mick Bailey said: "We've entered Band of the Year now for nine years or so in various incarnations of other bands, but now we've come together and formed the Culture Thieves it just feels right — and the results show.

"There were some great bands this year - my personal favourites were Mexican Kids At Home and Pocket Satellite as I think they show how much the competition has changed over the years.

"Now that we've finally won the competition it leaves us asking what we're going to do in Novembers from now on!

"We were just so glad so many people enjoyed what we did and the result went our way."
