Modernisation in the past two years has transformed The Royal Oak at Barlborough from a traditional pub into a contemporary restaurant and bar area.

Modernisation in the past two years has transformed The Royal Oak at Barlborough from a traditional pub into a contemporary restaurant and bar area.

The classy decor, with its leather studded sofas, chandeliers and muslin drapes, is as inviting as the friendly and enthusiastic staff who gave us a warm welcome as we arrived. We were offered a choice of sitting in the bar area or the restaurant, both equally comfortable, but we opted for the restaurant.

From quite an extensive menu, we chose the garlic mushrooms to start which came in a quirky lidded croc pot and were served with a warm bread roll. The mushrooms came in a mouthwatering sauce that wasn’t too heavy and left room for our main course.

It was curry night so my friend went for the vegetable curry which came with a glass of wine or pint of beer for £6.95. I had the spinach and ricotta tortellini, both meals were well presented. I always order chips which on this occasion were fabulously chunky homemade chips and did not disappoint.

The tomato sauce on my tortellini was basic but extremely well made making it an enhancement to my meal rather than over-dominant. The curry was mild yet flavoursome, a real delight for a pub curry. The portions were just enough for the average eater which meant there was just enough room to squeeze in a pudding.

At £4.75 the sticky toffee pudding with lashings if custard was an obvious choice from a list of traditional desserts.

The Royal Oak offers something for every taste: Tuesday is curry night, Wednesday steak night boasting Derbyshire beef and Friday Whitby fish night. There is a Saturday gourmet dining night and Sunday roasts are on offer with children’s prices at only £3.95. Forthcoming events include A Night With Eileen Proctor on June 4 with three- course meal for £19.99.

With its excellent service and wonderful food at great prices, I can’t wait to try more from the Royal Oak menu.
