Why we closed toilet facilities

SIR – May I respond to the letter regarding the closure of public toilets in Wingerworth (Mailbox, September 18).
I would just like to clarify that these facilities belong to Derbyshire County Council. NE Derbyshire District Council agreed to maintain the public toilets up until April 2008 under an agency agreement.
However, when the council took the decision to close our own facilities — in order to channel our funds to improve frontline services to residents — it became uneconomical to continue with this and so the council no longer maintains them on Derbyshire County Council's behalf.
Can I re-iterate, the decision to close our own public toilets in April 2008 was a difficult one, which followed a review of all services provided by NEDDC. However, the council needed to make substantial savings in order to balance our budget and avoid cuts to frontline services such as refuse collection, street cleansing and grounds maintenance.
Cllr Graham Baxter,
Leader,
NE Derbyshire District Council.
