SIR — I was delighted to learn that Chesterfield Borough Council has, at long last, seen sense and recognised that the shops and markets in the centre of town are suffering from reduced levels of business. The proposal to trial free parking in order to boost trade in the town centre is a welcome, albeit partial, reversal of the previous policy. At least someone in the Town Hall seems to have given up the pretence that our town centre and markets are thriving against the national trend.
I look forward to further measures, such as reducing the excessively high car parking charges throughout the week in all town centre car parks, in order to encourage more shoppers back into our ailing town centre.

Graham King,

58 Dukes Drive, Newbold, Chesterfield.
