SIR — Veterans Day is a national celebration of the nation's ex-service veterans and events are to be held throughout the country during June.
The 2008 Chesterfield and District Veteran Day event is to be held at Eastwood Hall, Rose Hill, Chesterfield on June 25 from 1-4pm with free entry to the public.
We held the first such event at the Town Hall in June last year. It was a real succ
ess and we have decided to develop the event and involve as many people as possible.
Last year we invited the public and schools to visit the displays of service life and campaign memorabilia from the Second World War to the Falklands War. We intend doing the same this year, but have invited primary schools to prepare their own displays based on "Who or What is a Veteran?'
We also hope to have the band of 73 Engineer Regiment (V) playing a selection of music during the afternoon.
We are currently trying to involve some of our younger veterans who may have left the services in recent years. We would also like to invite anyone who was conscripted into the coal mines (Bevin Boys) or joined the Land Army during the Second World War to take part in this year's event. They can contact me at the address below.
