SIR — Tim Moran (Mailbox, August 14) estimated that the three new Tesco stores would be equivalent in size to "well over 300 new independent retailers", commenting that this was "probably more than exist in Chesterfield at the moment."
According to The Retail Directory 2003 there were just 114 independent retailers in the town centre providing goods or services likely to be duplicated by the range offered by Tesco — in other words the new Tesco provision will be three times that of all the independent shops in the town centre combined.

What is also interesting is that, in total, there were 360 retail businesses listed in the directory — a number not dissimilar to that quoted by Mr Moran.

I offer this information without any political point to make or axe to grind, save one: it is very apparent how many of the independent retailers listed in the directory have disappeared while the larger multiples have remained and, indeed, flourished.

R. CLAYTON,

Grassmoor,
