That's rich, councillor

SIR — Cllr Morgan's letter (Mailbox, June 19) is typical of his approach to politics. He is very keen to criticise government policy without offering any real alternatives.
From his comments and those of other Liberal Democrat councillors who have written to the paper in recent weeks can we assume that if the Liberal Democrats ever take control of the county council they would pour more and more money into the police fo
rce without first ensuring that the money is going to be used efficiently. Without insisting on reforms any extra money going into the police force will be eaten up by bureaucracy rather than putting any extra policemen on the beat.

The Liberal Democrats would also continue to throw increasing amounts of money at failing schools rather than trying to adopt new approaches which will allow all children to gain the first class education they deserve.

When Liberal Democrat councillors criticise the government for scrapping the 10% tax band for poor people they conveniently forget that it was their party which removed thousands of pounds worth of funding from voluntary groups like the CAB and the Law Centre which offer vital services to people on very low income.

To claim that the government is trying to win favourable headlines in daily newspapers is very rich from a party that wastes large amounts of council tax papers money each year producing a propaganda sheet that seeks to portray the work of the council through rose tinted glasses.

All the evidence from up and down the country points to the fact that whenever the Liberal Democrats take control of a council the financial reserves of the councils soon start ebbing away.

What a shame that Cllr Morgan couldn't find space in his long rambling letter to praise the opening of the new motorway junction that will hopefully bring thousands of much needed jobs to the area and thousands of extra visitors to the town.

CRISPIN FISHER,
206 Hady Lane, Chesterfield.
