SIR — I write with a little anger and a lot of bewilderment on the layout at Horns Bridge island.
It was dangerous before, but with the addition of the B&Q road it is now a death trap waiting to happen.

If you go from Markham Road island down to Horns Bridge island you are on the right hand side.

How to go through all those lights and cross to the left hand side to go safely into B&Q without an abuse of horn-blowing, fist-waving and verbal abuse, is to me a great puzzle.

Rumours abound concerning what else might be put on the old Donkin site. Please do not allow it.

The new road into B&Q should, in my opinion, gone off the road which leads into Homebase.

BEWILDERED DRIVER,
Calow, Chesterfield.
Name and full address supplied.

The lane markings are not very good, just like those at the Tesco roundabout, the next one on the A61 northbound.Traffic islands stupid shapes, it makes you wonder what designs these things (as opposed to 'who' designs them). Have a look also at the total lack of common sense in the slip road to the Foxwood Industrial estate, the first turn off the A61 after Whittington Moor roundabout. Inept, or what? wasting our money? For sure. Still, I expect the designers have been given a pat on the back. Should have had a cop pat in the face more like.

The roundabouts mentioned above in Chesterfield must have been designed by the same numpty and his crayons. I notice rubbish roundabout design is becoming a theme with the new town planning, something I am sure we can all take pride in when the news goes national.

Aside from the issues regarding the total in-ability to turn right on to the main roundabout from the new B&Q without dying in a horrendous accident (unless it's 3am in the morning). The mini-roundabout at the entrance to B&Q’s car-park is a wonder to behold. What is that all about? A tight hair-pin turn to get in to the car-park after driving along what could be described as a run-way style approach.

Foolishly I thought the “old” B&Q was bad enough to get in and out of and would be addressed by the move, but no, the idiots at Chesterfield’s road planning department have crayoned an even bigger disaster. Good job no one needs to drive a van or larger vehicle into B&Q's car-park, Eh?

I have seen a number of near-misses at Horn's Bridge roundabout as people ignore the lane markings. Coming from the town centre, the middle lane is clearly marked for the A617, and the right hand lane for the A61. Drivers in the right hand lane then have to cross three lanes to get in the left hand lane to leave the roundabout on the A61. They then collide with those in the middle lane who decide they also want to be on the A61.

The best roundabout markings I have seen are the spiral ones, where you get thrown off the roundabout after three exits, like it or not!

The roundabouts aren't really any more complicated than others, just bigger.I find the lanes pretty easy to follow its just common sense, something a lot of road users don't seem to have when confronted with something so obviously baffling to them.
If you struggle with these, try having a flick through your highway code(there's even an online version).

The B&Q entrance is a joke though.Anything bigger than a Smart car is forced over into the oncoming lane which will eventually cause an accident.
