Let's have fewer bins

SIR — I write in response to the letter "Let's have more bins in the park' (Mailbox, August 7).
I am of the opinion that we need fewer, not more, litter bins.
For reasons of security, hygiene and cost of emptying and maintenance, litter bins are a drain on the economy as well as being unsightly.
Picnics in the park are to be encouraged, but why can a picnicking family not carry away their litter — after all they carried the wrappers to the picnic!
I would suggest that picnickers treat the park as a beauty spot — no one wants litter bins despoiling the countryside so why have them despoiling the park? If would be far better to encourage responsible personal management of waste.
