Just where DOES your money go?

SIR — With regard to Cllr. Graham Baxter's apology last week for closing public toilets in NE Derbyshire in order to save money, I point out the following:
1. NE Derbyshire no longer owns or looks after its own housing stock
2. NE Derbyshire has passed the maintenance of its public open spaces (grass-cutting fields) to local parish councils
3. It is considering outsourcing all its sports and leisure services
4. The Labour County Council has closed Deincourt and several primary schools
5. At national level the Labour Party has scrapped the 10% tax level for the lowest earners but failed to tax city fat cats
And now NE Derbyshire is closing toilets.
One is tempted to ask therefore, apart from giving all council staff an extra week's holiday, what IS this profligate district council spending its money on? Framed pictures of councillors?
At least it is quite obvious to see how, in these hard times, successful authorities are spending their money. You only have to drive into Chesterfield to see, when you look around, the changes in the last five years since the Liberal Democrats took control. Wake up NE Derbyshire!
