SIR — I visited a Chinese takeaway on the evening of September 6. While I was waiting for my meal an oldish man came in carrying a bag with a large bottle of cider in, and proceeded to purchase a bag of chips. He was, I believe, a homeless person and was a little unsteady on his feet, due I presume to drinking, but he was perfectly polite to us all and did not cause any trouble. After purchasing his chips he left the shop.
I left shortly afterwards in my car and as I was driving along Newbold Road, Chesterfield, I noticed the same man walking unsteadily along, chips in one hand and carrier bag with cider in the other. What worried me was a gang of youths, aged from about eight years to 17, taunting him from behind.

I stopped my car. Suddenly the younger boy grabbed the bottle of cider from the man and ran off down the road. I shouted at him to stop and give it back, but he just laughed and ran. A kind couple nearby offered to help, but they were threatened as well by the older boys.

These youngsters should not be out at night causing trouble — especially the younger ones. Where do the parents they they are? Do they care?

A curfew should be imposed to keep these hooligans off the street at night. It would be nice to think we had a police presence in these areas, not just the town centre.

MRS THOMAS,

Address supplied.
