SIR — I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the people who made sure this year's Alfreton 'Party in the Park' went ahead. With severe weather conditions threatening to cancel the whole event it is fair to say that the community was not about to let that happen.
You've all heard some people say there is no community spirit nowadays; this was not the case on the weekend of Party in the Park.
The community turned out in their droves to help the committee get the event set up and, crucially afterward
s clean up, in very wet conditions.
On the Friday and Saturday these volunteers were in the park from very early morning till late at night, and on the Monday following the Party, a large number of people once again turned out to help everyone get cleaned up.
On behalf of the party committee, I would like to thank the Fire Service and the Police who helped and advised us prior to the event, and both of these services turned out on the day in great numbers to ensure that safety of all attendees was a priority.
I would also like to give special mention of thanks to Elaine Burton and Paul Brown. Elaine turned out at the 11th hour after one of the lorries taking part in the procession failed to turn up, this would have meant a lot of children would have been very upset at not taking part in the procession. She was a heroine in coming to both their and our rescue.
Paul battled with the elements to provide his lorry trailer for our main stage, without which a large portion of the musical entertainments would not have been available.
All of the volunteer stewards who turned out on the Sunday and helped the day run very smoothly have the gratitude of the committee.
But finally, I would like to thank you, the people of Alfreton, the surrounding towns and villages for once again supporting this, our unique event.
Liam Connell,
Party in the Park Committee.
