SIR — Frank Stevenson has it exactly right ('Gala proves a big hit', Mailbox, July 3). The growing trend for "Friends of …" groups is a really powerful example of local communities taking ownership and responsibility for their particular area.
The latest Community Fun Day organised by Friends of Stand Road Park on July 5 proved equally successful as the Eastwood Park event Mr Stevenson refers to.

The event featured over 500 young footballers competing in tournaments run by Chesterfield Town FC; a range of music whose performers ranged in age from 8 to over 60; and a whole series of local community groups talking about the things they do in and for Chesterfield. All this arranged and promoted by local volunteers.

Most telling of all was the enthusiasm, skill and athleticism of a group of teenagers demonstrating "Kinetic hip hop street dancing" – which drew loud cheers from a large audience. I'm proud to report to your readers on so many young people doing their thing so well.

Ian Sutherland,

Secretary, Friends of Stand Road Park,

1 Rutland Street, Old Whittington, Chesterfield.
