Lee Richardson has billed this weekend's clash against Morecambe as Chesterfield's most important match of the season.

The play-off chasing Spireites go into the showdown at Christie Park on the back of two impressive victories and the team manager is hoping that winning momentum will contunue on the Lancashire coast.

Wycombe, who currently occupy the final play-off spot, have a game in hand over Chesterfield, plus a two-point advantage, but Richardson remains 'cautiously optimistic' that the men from Saltergate can go all the way

Richardson watched Morecambe's 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury on Tuesday and wants his side to bring home all three points from the game before the attention turns to the visit of promotion-seeking Darlington a week later.

''Six points from the next two games would be great, but I can't look any further forward than the next game. It's the most important one of the season.

''If we won all our remaining games we would have 78 points and in seasons past 71 or 72 has got you a play-off place.

''If we could manage 75 or 76 this season, we would be extremely unlucky not to be in the top seven. All we can do is concentrate on the games we have,'' he said.

New central defender Colin Hawkins made his debut in the 3-0 away win at Dagenham and had his first Saltergate outing in the 4-1 success against Shrewsbury, and his introduction alongside Aaron Downes has made the back line look more secure.

''His presence has helped and so far we have been pleased with what he has done. There's more to come from him,'' said Richardson. Hawkins (30) has a great deal of experience and he seems to have injected confidence into the centre of the defence.

At the other end of the pitch, frontman Jamie Ward is in a rich seam of form, has netted four goals in the last two wins to take his tally for the season to 11.

''Jamie's stepped into the limelight in the last two games but David Dowson has also been on form and he took his goals well against Shrewsbury.

''Steve Fletcher scored at Dagenham and Bruce Dyer has also made a contribution, so we have competition in that department,'' said Richardson.

Leading marksman Jack Lester, who suffered a badly-broken nose in the victory over Accrington, looks set to resume training at the end of this week.

Richardson could not pin-point a return date for his 26-goal man but said: ''I would be very disappointed if he did not play again this season.''

True Blue Travel buses for the Spireites first-ever visit to Morecambe leave Cross Street, Chesterfield, at 11am on Saturday.

Tickets can be reserved at the club shop, at Saltergate.
