Lee Richardson has given a big thumbs up to fans for their boisterous support during the Wycombe clash.
Although the game at Saltergate ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Blues, fans kept the noise level high throughout.

Chesterfield FC manager Richardson described the backing as 'absolutely brilliant.'

''The crowd was fantastic – that's the sort of support we get away but we need it at home because it makes such a difference to the players.

''We will do better if we get that kind of support, irrespective of who is manager. The fans were terrific, first class,'' said Richardson.

He added that backing from the fans was crucial as playing at home did not always guarantee an advantage.

''Because of the nature of the game, and tactics, visiting teams often just get men behind the ball. Sometimes there's no incentive for them to have a go.

''It's not just us that is finding this can happen, other teams such as Leeds are not firing at home,'' he said.

The Spireites have won both their League Two games on their travels, it is the home form that is worrying after two straight defeats at Saltergate.

The Blues had a chance to notch up their first win at home this term last night – when they faced Grimsby in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy – but it is the league that is of paramount importance to the club.

Richardson and his men have an opportunity to put and end to the losing league sequence on Saturday when derby rivals Rotherham United visit Saltergate.

The Millers have endured a turbulent summer, moving from their Millmoor home to the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield and being docked 17 points before a ball was kicked.

But they are so far unbeaten this season and have earned a plum home draw against Southampton in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Richardson believes Rotherham will present a tough test for Chesterfield.

''They have the bit between their teeth and I think, despite their points deduction, that they will be challenging for a play-off spot at least,'' said Richardson.

Last season's top scorer Jack Lester, who has missed the last two matches with a thigh strain, was expected to make his return to first-team action last night.

Skipper Rob Page was also available after missing the Wycombe game for compassionate reasons.

Keeper Trevor Carson, who was called into the Northern Ireland U21 squad for the European Championships against Germany this week, missed the Grimsby match but should return to the squad for the visit of Rotherham.

Wycombe's winner on Saturday came in the fourth minute when Mike Williamson headed home a free kick.

''All the work you do on the training ground comes to nothing. It was a free header, which is a cardinal sin and that comes down to individual responsibility.

''But I was pleased with our response. We created three or four good scoring opportunities. It was an encouraging performance,'' he said.
