Chesterfield FC's youth team has made an early exit from the Midlands Youth Cup.

The Spireites U18s faced Grimsby at Saltergate in the competition's first round and lost 2-1 on Tuesday evening.

The Mariners went ahead in the 11th minute and doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute, leaving Dave Bentley's youngsters with a lot of ground to make up.

Richie Holmes quickly pulled one back for Chesterfield, scoring in the 25th minute but the Blundell Park side held on to book their place in the competition's second round.

Forward Jordan Bowery, who made his Football League debut with the Spireites as a substitute in the home game against Wycome and came on in the 1-0 triumph over Rotherham, played for the first 64 minutes of the Midlands Cup match before being replaced.
