Thanks for bonfire help: We can’t do this alone

Can I on behalf of Staveley Town Council use your column to thank all those involved in making this year’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee bonfire and firework display in Staveley such a resounding success.

We began our annual bonfire and firework display to ensure public safety and provide another reason to visit our town.

This year we made a few changes - we set the display to music and closed Hall Lane to allow more room for the public. We had to ask the public for a £1 entrance fee for each adult and in the end we welcomed an estimated 6,000 people to see the bonfire (with 7 Guys) and magnificent fireworks.

We could not do it alone, I would like to thank our volunteers who helped build the bonfire, set out the field barriers and steward the event.

This year thanks to the Chesterfield Canal Society, Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Radio Club, students at Netherthorpe School, Friends of Pools Brool Country Park, Staveley Community Church, Staveley Hall Garden Centre and others, we had over 50 volunteers - true partnership in working.

We also had excellent help from Derbyshire County Council Officers, Chesterfield Borough Council Officers, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and the police.

Last but not least, I should like to thank my own staff - a great bunch. It meant a great evening held without any problems or incidents. We have had many compliments since and we will try and make sure 2013 is even better.

We are fortunate in Staveley to have such great and growing community spirit.
