STUDENTS at a north Derbyshire college will premiere a musical, which has been written by their teachers.

Cuan Jacques, drama teacher at Springwell Community College, Staveley, has collaborated with Katie Pettit, Deborah Rayner and Ryan Stacey from the music department to create Babycakes, which opens next week.

“This will be our first ever production in our new college – and we have really pushed the boat out for it,” said Cuan. “It promises to be a cracking show, performed by a brilliant and talented cast of students.”

The musical tells the story of Jake and Steph, two teenagers from rival schools who meet and fall in love. Can a music concert bring about peace and harmony between the warring schools – and more importantly save Mr Roche his job? Cuan likens Babycakes to Romeo and Juliet crossed with Waterloo Road – with some mischievous pensioners thrown in for good measure.

He has written a number of scripts before, taking three shows to the Edinburgh Festival, at which one of them won an award from the Observer newspaper.

One of his plays represented Britain at the Thespis Theatre Festival in Jerusalem in 2000 and a film he wrote won the Best International Film at the 48 Hour Film Challenge in San Jose seven years ago.

Caun said: “This is the first time I’ve written a musical. My father-in-law thinks it’s hilarious as I used to say I hate musicals.”

Babycakes runs at Springwell Community College from Tuesday, February 7, to Thursday, February 9, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £4 for adults and £2.50 (concessions). Tickets are available from the College on (01246) 473873.
