Matlock Rotarians have welcomed Peter Wigglesworth as their club’s new president.

Matlock Rotarians have welcomed Peter Wigglesworth as their club’s new president.

Outlining his programme, the new president said he would like to increase the club’s focus on charities and other activities in the local community.

The club had distributed more than £20,000 to local charities and young people, national and international causes over the year. There was also a substantial contribution to the Rotary fight to eradicate polio in the last handful of countries where it remains endemic.

During his inaugural speech Peter said “I would like to reduce the cost of belonging to Rotary by making meetings more informal and providing more variety.”

He added: “I hope that in the year we can keep the public informed of what we do as part of the Rotary movement and why the purpose of membership is to give something back to our community”.

On behalf of members, past president Bill Darley thanked retiring president EriC McCarrison for his efforts during the year and especially for “making a difference” with his drive and special “Scottish humour”.

Under the new “management team”, Matlock Rotary have a full social and fund raising schedule with some of the forthcoming events detailed below.

In conjunction with other local clubs,. the clun will be organising a vintage car rally and carft fair on July 29 at Ashover.

The 10th Dovedale Dipper Challenge is to be held on Augst 5, where participants can take part in a marathon of shorter 15-mile challenge. This event over the years has raised over £50,000 from entries and sponsorship.

The club will also be present at the Chatsworth Country Fair during the first weekend of September.
