WELL it’s obvious that Chesterfield Borough Council is not going to be giving us the all-weather athletics track on the Queen’s Park Annexe that we have for years yearned for.

Instead it has thrown a spanner in the works in the shape of a new sports centre, to be built on the site instead.

We have numerous objections to it, and here are a few of them:

It simply isn’t needed, there are dozens of fitness centres in and around town already.

They cannot afford it – they have the Market Hall, Donut Roundabout and Riverside development to pay for. Will this mean our Council Tax will be increased? I hope not!

The existing building should have been maintained properly over the years. It’s not very old. The parish church is still standing, and that was built in the 1300s.

A perfectly good football pitch will be lost, on which there are matches played most weekends, during the season.

Bird and animal life could disappear. There are many varieties of birds, plus foxes, squirrels and badgers in the annexe.

It also provides a green oasis between two busy roads – Boythorpe and Park roads. Why is it that some people see a green space, and decide it should be built upon?

It will spoil the locality’s quality of life – for example, with the pollution given off by the centre’s air-conditioning units, not to mention all of the extra traffic which will bring noise, congestion and indeed pollution.

Property prices will slump because of this project.

The council intends to spend £8m, possibly more, when surely £3m to modernise would have been sufficient?

As Chesterfield College has put forward £2.5m, let the thing be built on the adjacent reserved Riverside site. It would be nearer for students. Would councillors want it on their doorsteps?
