Our vote share increased
SIR — I feel I must write to correct the impression given by Cllr Denise Hawksworth (Mailbox, June 25), that the recent county council elections represent an endorsement of the policies of Chesterfield's Liberal Democrat controlled council.
She is correct in her assertion that in terms of overall share of the vote in Chesterfield the Liberal Democrat lead over Labour was greater than in 2005. However, the actual Lib Dem share of the vote declined, it was just that it declined by a slightly smaller amount than the Labour vote, hence the increased Lib Dem lead.
The only party whose share of the vote increased compared with 2005 was the Conservative party. Our percentage of the vote roughly doubled compared with four years ago, reaching its highest level since the 1992 General Election.
That election took place less than one year after the last local eelections in which Conservative councillors were elected in Chesterfield. Ms Hawksworth may not be able to emphasise the absence of Conservative councillors in Chesterfield for much longer.
