Runners and trekers set out on the 16th Grindleford Gallop on March 9 raising thousands of pounds for the village school.

MORE than 600 runners and walkers took part in the 16th Grindleford Gallop on Saturday, March 9, helping to raise thousands of pounds for projects at Grindleford Primary School.

The Grindleford Gallop, a 21 mile race around some of the Peak District’s most beautiful spots, is the primary fundraising event for the Grindleford Parent, Teachers and Friends Association.

Over the years it has helped to subsidise school trips for pupils, built a trim trail in the playground and a pond area in the school grounds.

Radio DJ Mark Goodier, who has run the Grindleford Gallop for the past five years, also presented a cheque to the school just before the start of the race.

The event is a major date in the village calendar with residents and local businesses providing support. Winners’ prizes were supplied by outdoor equipment and clothing specialist, Outside, whilst the soup served to finishers was produced by Grindleford’s The Sir William Hotel and Peak Fruits in Hathersage. The Cotswold Company provided goody bags to the finishers.

Village residents also pulled together to bake over 1500 pieces of flapjack, cakes and biscuits to feed competitors en route and manned checkpoints around the course, handled registration and recorded finishers.

This year’s event was won by Gareth Lowe of Clowne Road Runners who finished in a time of two hours, 30 minutes and 55 seconds.

The first woman home was Sally Fawcett of Hallamshire Harriers, completing the course in two hours, 48 minutes and 52 seconds.
