Church members in Ashover are to be given a first-hand account of the ‘amazing growth’ of the Christian Church in the hostile environment of the Marsabit diocese of Kenya with which they have a close link.

It will come from Bishop Rob Martin, Anglican Bishop of Marsabit, and his wife, Sue (pictured), who will make a flying visit to All Saints Church in Ashover, one of their mission partners in the UK, this weekend.

In Kenya, the couple minister in a largely Muslim area the size of England and have responsibility for 39 churches and eleven schools throughout the Marsabit region.

On their visit to Ashover last year, Bishop Rob had warned: “Kenya is a country in tension and we face many challenges. It’s hard to live in Northern Kenya as a Christian.”

Ashover ministry team members the Right Rev Bob Beak, Assistant Bishop of Derby, and his wife, Peggy, take a particularly close interest in events in Marsabit.

Bishop Bob was formerly Bishop of Marsabit when Rob worked as an accountant in the Diocese of Mount Kenya East before returning to England to train for the Anglican priesthood.

“It is truly amazing how much Bishop Rob has achieved in four years – three times the growth we experienced in the last 25 – despite the increase in violent opposition,” said Bishop Bob this week.

Bishop Rob will preach at the Sunday morning service on September 30 and will make an additional presentation during a bring-and-share lunch in the Bassett Rooms.
