Supporters of the Ashover Church appeal to fund the purchase of two off-road trail bikes for use by Christian clergy in a wild and often lawless area of northern Kenya have been given their first glimpses of the machines.

Images of the two Suzuki 125cc off-roaders, which have been bought to honour the Right Rev Bob Beak and his wife, Peggy, two members of the Ashover ministry team, for their long service at home and abroad, were shown to members of All Saints this week during a flying visit to the village by the Right Rev Rob Martin, Diocesan Bishop of Marsabit, in Kenya, and his wife, Sue.

Bishop Bob and Peggy formerly served in Marsabit and still maintain close links with Bishop Rob and Sue who have responsibility for 46 churches in 11 parishes spread over an area the size of England that has virtually no tarmac road.

The bikes, which have the names Bob and Peggy painted on their fuel tanks, were bought for £5,000 to help Marsabit’s Christian clergy carry out their duties in some of the most remote areas of the diocese.

Bishop Rob told the Ashover church members: “We are so grateful to everyone who made this possible. The bikes are absolutely fantastic.”

Graphic pictures of the recent drought, famine relief operations (the Marsabit diocese fed 25,000 people every month for three months) and the floods which subsequently swept through Marsabit were also shown to appeal supporters.
