MORE than a hundred people attended the funeral of Alan Tennant whose body was discovered in a river nearly two months after he went missing.
Mr Tennant (25), of King Street, Clowne, had spent a night-out with friends in Chesterfield town centre, on Christmas Eve, when he vanished sparking a major search operation.
His body was discovered in the River Rother, at Staveley, in mid-February, by a passer-by.
His family - who told how a part of their lives had gone forever - said they were moved to see about 150 people at Mr Tennant's funeral, at Clowne Parish Church, on Monday, with many more well-wishers lining the streets in tribute.
Sister Carmen Tennant (35), of Royal Oak Court, Mastin Moor, said: "It was a lovely service and the church was packed and everyone came out of their shops and homes to line the streets. We'd like to thank all the many people who loved Alan and the police who supported our family."
Close friends joined Miss Tennant during a lantern-lit, memorial walk and last farewell to her brother, on Monday evening, along the River Rother where Mr Tennant's body was found.
Police, family and friends who feared Mr Tennant had been walking home in freezing conditions had carried out searches and poster appeals.
Peak FM radio also organised a walk and search to raise awareness to trace Mr Tennant with support from the Missing People website charity.
After his body was discovered officers confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.
Miss Tennant added: "Alan was popular, friendly, happy-go-lucky and a loving brother who would do anything to help you. He was a free-spirit and just wanted to enjoy life.
"We're all going to miss him so very much but he would have wanted us to try and get on with our lives and try to be happy again one day."
Mr Tennant worked as a supermarket employee at Tesco, in Clowne, and was a fan of heavy rock music and Manchester United as well as enjoying computer games and socialising, according to his family.
As well as sister Carmen he leaves mother Jennifer Tennant, another sister and two nephews. Cremation, at Chesterfield Crematorium, followed the funeral service.
His family, whose only income is welfare benefits, has launched a fund-raising appeal for the Missing People charity and for funeral costs. Those interested can contact Miss Tennant at carms1974@hotmail.com.
