One of the most famous names in brewing in Chesterfield is back in business after a five-strong team of beer lovers re-launched the brand.
The new Brampton Brewery is producing four ales from its purpose- built site on Chatsworth Business Park – just 200 yards from where the operation is thought to have been based almost two centuries ago.

Head brewer Chris Radford said: "The early origins of Brampton Brewery are somewhat shrouded in the mists of time.

"People still associate Brampton Brewery with the B&Q site on West Bars roundabout but a brewery – possibly the original Brampton Brewery – existed in Brewery Yard on Brampton as early as the 1820s.

"Whether or not these two breweries are connected cannot be proven – but either way the most important thing is that we've managed to get this famous old name up, running and brewing again."

Chris has been joined in the venture by John Hirst, his brother-in-law and a local brewery historian. Also in the five-strong team are Brampton-based ice cream maker John Frederick and undertaker David Hattersley, who are real ale enthusiasts, and Jon Leeming.

The four beers are Golden Bud, Brampton Best, Impy Dark and Wasp Nest, which have won positive reviews at beer festivals since their launch and are available at a number of local outlets.

Former Chesterfield FC manager John Duncan and ex-players Bob Newton and Ernie Moss will be at the brewery's official launch on Sunday.
