A driver involved in a three-car crash on the M1 has died of his injuries in hospital.

The man in his 20s from the North-East of England was driving a Honda Civic, which collided with a Volkswagen Passat and a Ford Focus at 5am on Wednesday.

He died at the Kings Mill Centre, Sutton-in-Ashfield, this morning.
The vehicles were travelling between junctions 29 and 28 south-bound, and the stretch was closed off for nearly seven hours while officers cleared the scene and began an investigation into the cause of the collision.

Three male passengers in the Honda Civic were taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital with broken bones and head injuries, and the driver of the Ford Focus, who sustained whip lash, was taken to the Kings Mill Centre.

The driver of the VW Passat, who suffered head injuries, and two children passengers who had whip lash and stomach injuries, have now been released from hospital.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the collision to contact them on 0845 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
