A mum and tot were rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped in a broken-down lift during soaring temperatures.

The pair were in the lift at Chesterfield's Nat West bank, along with the manager, when it stopped working at 4.40pm on Thursday (May 8).

Watch manager Glyn Davidson, of Chesterfield fire service, said: "Due to the warm weather and conditions, we were very concerned about dehydration and heat problems for those trapped, especially the young child."

Firefighters isolated the electrics in the motor room then moved the lift by hand before prising the doors open.

The mum, 17-month-old child and manager at the Market Place bank, were freed within 45 minutes.

The fire service praised the mother, who stripped her child and gave the youngster plenty of drink throughout the ordeal.

Watch manager Davidson added: "An ambulance was requested as a precaution for the child but the mother did everything right and everyone was safely released."
