Cost-cutting council chiefs are to close the bar facilities at a north Derbyshire leisure centre – putting the jobs of 17 members of staff at risk.
NE Derbyshire District Council is closing the bar and catering facilities at Sharley Park Leisure Centre in Clay Cross as part of measures to focus its resources on 'core and essential' services.
A total of 17 casual, part-time and full-time staff
are affected by the closure and the council is working with them to consider alternative employment options.
A council spokeswoman said: "The council has had to make some hard decisions in terms of its spending priorities and where its resources can best be used.
"The council acknowledges that the café and bar at Sharley Park Leisure Centre require substantial renovation and refurbishment.
"As a result, the council has taken the decision to close the bar and catering facilities, in their current form, towards the end of the summer."
The council is now consulting with user groups to determine appropriate alternative refreshment facilities and is intending to create a modern refreshment area including a range of vending facilities.
The authority spends more than £80,000-a-year on the provision of leisure service catering.
