Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Ian Clulow was due to start revolutionary medical treatment yesterday to transform his life.
He is undergoing a stem cell transplant which, if successful, will provide a beacon for fellow sufferers of the debilitating disease.

Ian, who lives in Lower Pilsley, near Clay Cross, was due to have a drug line inserted yesterday, followed by dai
ly growth factor injections this week.

Harvesting of his newly liberated stem cells will begin on the first week in July and the immuno-suppression phase of the treatment, requiring three weeks' isolation, starts on July 14.

Fund-raisers from Matlock Gilbert & Sullivan Society, of which Ian is a member, have launched a £24,000 appeal towards the cost of his treatment, which is not available on the NHS.

They kick off a series of money-spinning events on July 18 with a concert at All Saints Church, Matlock, followed by a sponsored walk from Matlock to Bakewell on Sunday, July 20.

Ian said: "Sadly, because of my isolation I can't join my friends and well-wishers but I will be with them in spirit, as I know they will be with me."
